The Weekly Playlist (4th December – 10th December)

Image Credits: pixabay.comImage Credits: pixabay.com Image Credits: pixabay.com

Welcome back, dear friends! This is the second Weekly Playlist from the month of December. I think all the Christmas enthusiasts out there are getting really excited now that there are only two weeks left until the Christmas Day. Although I’m not the biggest fan of this popular festivity, please observe that the picture I used for this article is Christmas-themed. Well, kind of. It’s a very subtle allusion to Christmas, I admit, but still, it’s something.

For today’s Playlist, I featured in the section of new songs Camila Cabello, Eminem (the first time he is mentioned here) and Rudimental. Then, in the following section, you’ll watch new music videos from Louis Tomlinson, Grace VanderWaal and Lecrae. And in the end, I have three new albums to show you from QTY, Big Sean and Metro Boomin and Belle and Sebastian. So, if anything from this list raised your interest, then keep reading and let us begin with the first section of the Weekly Playlist!

New Songs

Camila Cabello – ‘Real Friends’

‘Real Friends’ is a new track from Camila’s upcoming self-titled album which is set to be released next year, on the 12th January. ‘Real Friends’ is a bit different from her previous releases in the sense that this one has a lower tempo and a more melancholic vibe. If you’re familiar with Camila’s background, you know that she started off her music career as part of Fifth Harmony before taking the path of a solo career. Well, rumour has it that this song is about her not-so-real friends from Fifth Harmony and the time when she was still part of the group. But, nothing’s confirmed so I guess we’ll never know for sure. Just like with Taylor Swift’s songs and the allusions to her ex-boyfriends.

Eminem – ‘Untouchable’

As I previously said, this is the first time Eminem is mentioned in a Weekly Playlist, so let’s give him a round of applause! ‘Untouchable’, a six-minute track, was revealed ahead of his upcoming ninth album, Revival which will be released in only a few days, so keep an open for that. There’s not much to say about this track, just that I’m pretty sure you’ll like this new song if you’re an Eminem fan.

Rudimental, The Martinez Brothers ft. Donna Missal – ‘No Fear’

Moving on to the electronic/house side of the music realm, there is a new collaboration between Rudimental and The Martinez Brothers, both recognizable names in this music genre. I think ‘No Fear’ is a great combination of the skills of Rudimental and The Martinez Brothers and the charming voice of Donna Missal. If you’re into this kind of music, you’ll definitely like ‘No Fear’.

New Music Videos

Louis Tomlinson – ‘Miss You’

This is also the first time Louis Tomlinson is featured here with a music video for his song ‘Miss You’. The music video (and the song) reminded me of the days when One Direction was still a thing. If you watch the video you will understand what I’m talking about. What I found particularly funny about the video was that you can see Tomlinson hanging out with his group of friends, group which consists of 5 people. And which other group had 5 members? You’re right! One Direction. Maybe this is his way of saying he misses the group.

Grace VanderWaal – ‘So Much More Than This’

The next music video is for a great song released earlier this year, ‘So Much More Than This’. Grace VanderWaal is only 13 years old and she’s already building a strong music career. Many people compared her voice to the voice of someone much older and I think this music video is great because it represents her youthfulness. So, in a way, it counterbalances her mature voice.

Lecrae – ‘Broke’

‘Broke’ is taken from Lecrae’s latest album, All Things Work Together, released back in September. The interesting thing about this video is that although I think it’s quite a generic music video for a hip-hop/rap song, something about it really appealed to me and that’s why I featured it here. I think those neon lights in those dark spaces create really cool visuals.

New Albums

QTY – QTY

QTY are a duo from New York who released a self-titled record of 10 tracks. Interesting fact, although they’re based on the eastern coast of the US, they recorded this album in London. I think QTY will be a great treat for the alternative rock lovers so if you’re part of that group, go ahead and give this album a try.

Big Sean, Metro Boomin – Double or Nothing

From the hip-hop/rap genre, Big Sean and Metro Boomin have a new collaborative album consisting of 10 tracks. The album also features other big names from the same genre such as Travis Scott, 2 Chainz, 21 Savage and Young Thug. If you’re into this kind of music, then this album is perfect for you.

Belle and Sebastian – How To Solve Our Human Problems (Part 1)

How To Solve Our Human Problems is the first part in a trilogy of mini-albums from the Scottish band, Belle and Sebastian. The record consists of 6 indie-pop tracks, with my favourite being probably ‘The Girl Doesn’t Get It’. If you like this record, then know that the next two mini albums are coming in January and February, respectively.

Council tenant who has lung condition left with leaking roof over Christmas

Renfrewshire Council has blamed a high number of jobs over Christmas for not fixing a tenant’s leaking roof.

The ceiling in Yvonne Cochrane’s bedroom caved in at the end of October after water leaked through the roof.

An temporary repair was carried out and a housing inspector told her the work would be finished in early December.

But almost two months later, it’s still not been done and Yvonne said living out of one room and the stress of the damp has affected her mental health.

She said: “The housing inspector came out and told me scaffolding would be put up on December 6 to clean all the mess of the guttering. I’ve lived here 17 years and the guttering has never been done.

“The sixth came and went and no one came at all. The other date I was told was December 21 to repair the ceiling.

“I got a phone call to check I would be in but I told them not to bother. They’ve not fixed the roof yet so there’s no point fixing the ceiling. The walls are wet, if you put any pressure on them they cave.”

Yvonne has lived in the two-bedroom upper-floor flat on Glenburn Crescent, Paisley, for the last 17 years. She is a Renfrewshire Council tenant along with one other resident of the four-in-a-block.

She said roof tiles blew off seven years ago and claims a repair done by Renfrewshire Council hasn’t fixed the problem.

Yvonne, 50, has epilepsy and lung condition COPD and said the conditions she’s living in are making her physical and mental health worse.

She said: I don’t feel safe. All my stuff smells of damp.

“I am a vulnerable person and this has really been getting me down.

“My back bedroom furniture is in my living room so I’m stuck in my bedroom. I’m living out of one room at the moment.

“They need to get it fixed or get me a new house.”

A Renfrewshire Council spokesman apologised for the delay in the work being done.

He said: “The roof was repaired in 2013 and leaking gutters repaired in 2019.

“As soon as this recent incident was reported to us, our housing repairs team responded immediately, carrying out an emergency repair on November 3.

“A housing repairs officer then visited the tenant to consider the further repairs required and these are scheduled to take place as soon as possible, with scaffolding being put in place next week.

“Unfortunately this was initially delayed due to the volume of work over the festive period and we are sorry to the tenant for the delay and the impact she has felt from this.”

Mark Drakeford wrote to Boris Johnson in furlough plea before Covid restrictions decision in Wales

First Minister Mark Drakeford wrote to Prime Minister Boris Johnson to urge him to re-introduce furlough as the Welsh Government cabinet debated new restrictions in Wales.

The cabinet met on December 16 to decide if additional measures were needed as the Omicron wave swept the UK – and the next day Mr Drakeford announced extra rules on hospitality, events and the closure of nightclubs for after Christmas.

The Chief Medical Officer Frank Atherton informed the cabinet that Omicron cases were doubling every three days and while there were reports of reduced severity in symptoms the sheer number of cases would lead to substantial pressure on the NHS.

Minutes from the meeting state there was a great deal of concern that the UK government appeared to be ignoring the scientific advice on the spread of Omicron and the Chief Secretary to the Treasury had refused to provide financial support to the devolved governments to take their own measures.

Given the financial constraints, ministers agreed that officials should explore whether rules could be strengthened by moving from guidance to regulations wherever possible and limiting social contact.

The meeting was paused and when they reconvened First Minister informed cabinet that he had written to the Prime Minister earlier that day to urge him again to either reintroduce the furlough scheme, along with allied measures, for the whole of the UK or to provide the devolved governments with access to Treasury funds to enable them to introduce their own measures.

Furlough was never re-introduced but UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced additional rates linked support on December 21 – with Welsh Government receiving £50m.

Cabinet agreed there should be more stringent measures – with further legal restrictions to include the reintroduction of two metre social distancing and the rule of six.

Ministers considered the impact of Omicron on nightclubs and concluded, with the additional risk of infection in confined spaces, they should all close from Boxing Day.

The measures were greeted with dismay by the hospitality sector which had already seen trade devastated by the Omicron wave as people cancelled events and going out plans.

Extra rules were not introduced in England and the country also saw cases dip following the Omicron peak – prompting criticism that the rules in Wales – lifted this weekend – had not been necessary.

Welsh Government has pointed to lower infection rates in Wales in the ONS figures compared to England over the period when the rules in Wales were in force.

The Government has introduced a £120m support package for businesses impacted by the Omicron wave and extra restrictions in Wales.

Omicron: Signs the variant could have peaked

Speaking in early December 2021, when Omicron was just taking hold as the dominant variant in the UK, Chief Medical Officer for England and Chief Medical Adviser, Professor Chris Witty briefeed ministers and the public.

The variant, which multiplies 70 times faster than Delta, was causing deep concern and many were asking when it would peak.

Witty said: “It will probably peak really quite fast and my anticipation is it may come down faster than previous peaks, but I wouldn’t want to say that for sure.”

“The whole point about this is it’s going to be really concentrated in a very short period of time.”

“The numbers in hospital over a short period could be very high indeed. This will be happening at a time when a very significant number of staff are going to be off ill, isolating or caring.”

“So you’re going to have both a reduction in supply and an increase in demand in the health service over a very short time period,” Whitty added.

Previously, waves of Delta lasted for around two months, but Witty claimed Omicron would be different due to its rapidity of infection. It appears he was right.

Has Omicron peaked?

After a huge spike in cases smashed the UK’s daily record in December, which saw 200,000 people in 24 hours infected, cases have plateaued to around 90,000 per day.

Figures appear to suggest Omicron has peaked, but is not falling at the rate scientists desire.

University College London epidemiologist Professor Tim Colbourn, speaking to the BBC said though it is hard to predict what may happen in the coming weeks, South Africa, where the variant first emerged, is seeing case numbers slowly decline.

Man ploughs into driveway and shunts Audi ‘six feet sideways’

A man ploughed into a driveway and damaged an Audi after drinking Amstel with friends on Christmas Eve.

Joseph Haughton, 23, of Porlock Gardens in Nailsea, lost control of his car when he offered to drop friends home after a night out at the pub.

He crashed into a driveway on Trendlewood Way, and shunted an Audi six feet sideways, to the shock of a family living inside.

Haughton, a trainee financial advisor at a top firm, appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (January 27) and pleaded guilty to drink driving and careless driving.

Lucy Eastwood, prosecuting, told the court that Haughton was driving a black Fiat Punto when he lost control and drove into a driveway, causing damage to the railings.

“The owner heard a bang and looked out of her window,” Ms Eastwood said.

“She saw her son’s Audi had been shunted six feet sideways. It had sustained damage to the front passenger side, and the rear wheel and passenger window had been smashed.”

Ms Eastwood explained that Haughton got back into the vehicle, but the homeowner took the keys out of the ignition to prevent him driving off.

Police were called, and Haughton admitted he had “had a few drinks tonight.”

He was taken into custody and produced a reading of 85 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Anton Balkitis, mitigating, says Haughton’s role as a trainee financial advisor requires him to drive across the South West. He is concerned it could jeopardise his future career prospects.

“He wasn’t at work that night,” Mr Balkitis said. “He was out with friends. He spent some time drinking in the Ring O’Bells pub in Nailsea.

“He didn’t take his car to the pub. He walked there and him and his friends walked back to his home address.

“He can’t think why he got back to his home address and offered his friends lifts. It was a very foolish thing for him to do.

“He had some pints of Amstel lager but didn’t feel impaired. It was a spur of the moment, mad thing to do.”

Mr Balkitis explained Haughton, who is “deeply remorseful,” had “no intention” of driving off when he got back into the car. “He said he was trying to move his car out of the public highway,” he added.

Magistrate Deborah Merrick ordered Haughton to pay a fine of £422, a victim surcharge of £42 and £85 in costs. He has also been disqualified from driving for 20 months, which will be reduced by 152 days providing Haughton completes the driving rehabilitation course.

Jinger reunites with mom Michelle after she SNUBBED family on Christmas

JINGER Duggar reunited with her mom Michelle, her sister Jana, and other siblings on a family visit to LA despite her holiday snub.

The Counting On star neglected to stop by her parent’s Arkansas home for Christmas despite leaving LA for the season.

However, any animosity seemed dissipated as Jinger, 28, welcomed her family with open arms as they visited her in the California hotspot.

The reality star was spotted on a casual stroll on Tuesday morning with her mom Michelle, 55, sister Jana, 32, and brothers Jason, 21, and James, 20.

The group was all smiles as they soaked up the sun and attended church after arriving the night before.

The controversial family appeared upbeat despite the drama that has plagued their family in the last several months, namely 33-year-old Josh Duggar’s child sex abuse case.

Michelle wore a traditional black skirt with leggings underneath, a long-sleeved striped shirt, and her signature curly brown locks tied in a scrunchie.

Jinger went for a more modern look in black jeans, combat boots, and a short-sleeved tan top.

Older sister Jana kept it simple in black denim, a white tee-shirt, and matching sneakers.

The family chatted after their morning service before heading to grab lunch at fast-food joint In N Out.

Afterward, Jinger and her family made their way to an auto repair shop before heading back for the evening.

Michelle’s visit came as a bit of a shock, as her California-based daughter made no effort to visit the family for the holidays.

HOLIDAY SNUB

The young mother snubbed her parents and siblings by heading out for an East Coast ski trip instead of settling in Arkansas for Christmas.

Jinger has chosen to distance herself from her family in recent months after her brother’s shocking child pornography case and guilty charge.

Despite the entire Duggar clan convening at the family compound in Arkansas, the podcast host and her husband Jeremy, 33, instead headed to Pennsylvania with their daughters to be with her in-laws for the holidays.

The couple shared photos on social media of their quiet getaway, which included card games, skiing, shopping, train rides, and indulging in Whoopie pies.

The festivities kicked off with an outing through Jeremy’s hometown of Downingtown, where they also celebrated Jinger’s 28th birthday.

The mother of two shared photos of the pair enjoying the day, captioning the post: “Breakfast at the Coffee Cup Restaurant. Dutch Haven for soft pretzels and Whoopie pie.”

The following day, Jeremy took to the platform to show the family-of-four’s gorgeous view as they walked through a farm.

He reminisced about the special location in the caption, writing: “Exploring one of my favorite childhood destinations: Springton Manor Farm.

“Would spend hours here with my family, usually on my dad’s days off, exploring, fishing, and getting lost with my brother and sister. A bit nostalgic coming back now with the girls.”

Despite spending so much time on the east coast, Jinger decided not to visit her family in Arkansas during her stay.

Jana Duggar shared a series of loving videos on Instagram of herself, James, Jessa, and Joy-Anna celebrating the holiday with their families at their Tontitown, Arkansas home.

GUILTY AS CHARGED

Those in attendance were all smiles as they seemingly tried to put the drama from the past few months behind them.

Josh was found guilty earlier in December after a nearly two-week-long trial.

The ex-reality star faces 20 years in prison for each count.

Jinger and Jeremy gave a joint statement following the verdict, saying: “We are thankful to God for exposing Josh’s actions and to a legal system committed to protecting the innocent and punishing the guilty in this case.

“We are grateful for justice. We are praying for further justice, vindication, protection, and healing for all those who have been wronged.”

Jinger and her hubby share two daughters, Felicity, three, and Evangeline, one.

Full list of Downing Street ‘lockdown-breaking parties’ now standing at 15

The list of alleged government lockdown-busting parties continues to grow – from BYOB bashes to birthday gatherings.

Boris Johnson is under increasing pressure after fresh allegations emerged last night (January 24) of a birthday party attended by 30 staff during the first lockdown.

The party is alleged to have happened in June 2020, when Covid rules banned indoor social gatherings.

Senior civil servant Sue Gray is chairing an inquiry into the alleged hangouts at Downing Street.

Here’s a full list of the alleged gatherings her report, due to be published this week, will focus on.

May 15, 2020: ‘Cheese and wine’ in the No 10 garden

Boris Johnson, his wife Carrie, former chief adviser Dominic Cummings and Mr Johnson’s principal private secretary, Martin Reynolds, were all pictured in a photograph leaked to The Guardian sitting around a table in the No 10 garden, with wine and cheese in front of them.

Some 15 other people were also in the photograph, but the Prime Minister has insisted this was a work meeting, saying: “Those were meetings of people at work, talking about work.”

May 20, 2020: BYOB garden party

The revelation came in an email, leaked to ITV, from Mr Reynolds to more than 100 Downing Street employees inviting them to ‘bring your own booze’ for an evening gathering.

A witness said: “There were 40 people in the garden, including Boris and Carrie.

“There were long tables laden with drink, crisps, sausage rolls and other picnic food. It was a proper booze-up.”

The PM admitted attending the gathering, but insisted he believed it was a work event which could ‘technically’ have been within the rules.

June 19, 2020: Alleged birthday party for Boris Johnson

Carrie Johnson allegedly organised a birthday party for the PM

A Downing Street spokesman admitted staff ‘gathered briefly’ in the Cabinet Room after a meeting, following a report from ITV News which suggested up to 30 people attended.

The broadcaster suggested the Prime Minister’s wife had organised the surprise get-together at which she led the staff in a chorus of happy birthday while the PM was presented with a cake, before tucking into picnic food from M&S.

The PA news agency was told Lulu Lytle, the interior designer behind lavish renovations of Mr and Mrs Johnson’s No 10 flat, briefly attended while undertaking work in Downing Street.

No 10 did not deny the event took place, but claimed the Prime Minister only attended briefly.

A No 10 spokesman said: “A group of staff working in No 10 that day gathered briefly in the Cabinet Room after a meeting to wish the Prime Minister a happy birthday.

“He was there for less than 10 minutes.”

November 13, 2020: Leaving party for senior aide

According to reports at the time, Mr Johnson gave a leaving speech for Lee Cain, his departing director of communications and a close ally of Mr Cummings.

It was alleged loud music and sounds of a party were heard coming from the flat occupied by Mr Johnson and his wife – though Downing Street denies there was any rule-breaking.

November 13, 2020: Flat party on night Cummings quit

Sources told the Mirror No10 aides ‘drank their socks off’ at an alleged gathering in Boris and Carrie Johnson’s flat above 11 Downing Street.

Staff reported hearing “loud music pumping out of the flat” late into the night after Dominic Cummings quit that night in a blaze of publicity.

The Mail on Sunday even described it at the time as a ‘victory party’ celebrating the departure of Mr Cummings – a rival of Carrie Johnson.

Mr Cummings has claimed there was a party in the flat on November 13 and ‘other flat parties’ that should be investigated.

A spokesman for Mrs Johnson dismissed the claims as ‘total nonsense’, adding: “Mrs Johnson has followed coronavirus rules at all times and it is categorically untrue to suggest otherwise.”

November 25, 2020: Treasury drinks

A Treasury spokesman told The Times that a number of staff had gone into the office to work on the Spending Review.

He said: “We have been made aware that a small number of those staff had impromptu drinks around their desks after the event.”

November 27, 2020: Second staff leaving do

The Mirror reported that the Prime Minister gave a farewell speech to an aide at the end of November while the lockdown in England was still in place.

Other reports have said the leaving do was for Cleo Watson, a senior Downing Street aide and ally of Mr Cummings.

December 10, 2020: Department for Education party

The DfE confirmed a social event had happened after The Mirror reported that former education secretary Gavin Williamson threw a party and delivered a short speech at an event organised at his department’s Whitehall headquarters.

London was in Tier 2 – which banned any social mixing between households – at the time.

A spokesman acknowledged that ‘it would have been better not to have gathered in this way at that particular time’.

December 11, 2020: Wine fridge delivered to Downing Street for staff’s ‘wine-time Fridays’

A wine fridge was pictured being delivered to Downing Street on December 11

A fridge with the capacity for 34 wine bottles was delivered through the back door of No 10.

According to sources cited by The Mirror, the fridge became necessary for staff’s ‘wine-time Fridays’ which were held throughout lockdown, with the Prime Minister allegedly encouraging the parties to help aides ‘let off steam’.

The regular social gatherings were reported to be particularly popular among staff between autumn 2020 and spring 2021 when staff were ‘fatigued’ with tough Covid restrictions that banned socialising.

Mr Johnson was said to have attended a ‘handful’ of these gatherings.

December 14, 2020: Party featuring Tory London mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey and staff

Shaun Bailey apologised ‘unreservedly’ for attending the gathering at Conservative Campaign Headquarters organised by staff on his campaign team.

He quit his role chairing the London Assembly’s Police and Crime Committee after The Mirror published a picture showing him at the gathering.

It shows 24 people crowded together in a room in the party’s Westminster HQ.

Some of the group are shown wearing paper hats while one is sporting a House of Commons Christmas jumper and a spread of food sits on the side.

‘It was a serious error of judgement at a time when Londoners were making immense sacrifices to keep us all safe and I regret it wholeheartedly,’ Mr Bailey tweeted.

December 15, 2020: Downing Street quiz

The Prime Minister appeared on contestants’ screens at the quiz but insisted he broke no rules.

An image published by the Sunday Mirror showed Mr Johnson flanked by colleagues, one draped in tinsel and another wearing a Santa hat, in No 10.

Downing Street admitted Mr Johnson ‘briefly’ attended the quiz after the photographic evidence emerged but insisted it was a virtual event.

December 16, 2020: Department for Transport party

The Mirror reported that senior civil servants were ‘boozing and dancing’ at the event, allegedly planned by staff from Transport Secretary Grant Shapps’ office.

A DfT spokesman said: “Fewer than a dozen staff who were working in the office had a low-key, socially distanced gathering in the large open-plan office after work on December 16, where food and drink was consumed.

“We recognise this was inappropriate and apologise for the error of judgement.”

December 17, 2020: Cabinet Office ‘Christmas party’

A number of outlets reported that a gathering was held in the Cabinet Office on December 17.

The Times reported that Cabinet Secretary Simon Case attended the party in room 103 of the Cabinet Office, that it had been organised by a private secretary in Mr Case’s team, and that it was included in digital calendars as ‘Christmas party!’.

The Cabinet Office confirmed a quiz took place, but a spokesman said: “The Cabinet Secretary played no part in the event, but walked through the team’s office on the way to his own office.”

December 17, 2020: Leaving drinks for former Covid Taskforce head

The former director-general of the Government’s Covid Taskforce said she was ‘truly sorry’ over an evening gathering in the Cabinet Office for her leaving drinks during coronavirus restrictions days before Christmas in 2020.

Kate Josephs, who is now chief executive of Sheffield City Council, said she gathered with colleagues who were in the office that day and added that she is co-operating with the probe by senior civil servant Sue Gray.

December 18, 2020: Christmas party at Downing Street

The claim which kicked off the rule-breaking allegations is that a party was held for Downing Street staff on December 18.

Officials and advisers reportedly made speeches, enjoyed a cheese board, drank together and exchanged Secret Santa gifts, although the Prime Minister is not thought to have attended.

Mr Johnson’s spokesman, Allegra Stratton, quit after being filmed joking about it with fellow aides at a mock press conference.

Run up to Christmas 2020

The Daily Mirror reported that Mr Johnson attended a leaving do for defence adviser Captain Steve Higham before Christmas 2020.

The newspaper alleged the Prime Minister made a speech but No 10 did not respond to a request for comment and the Ministry of Defence declined.

April 16, 2021: Drinks and dancing the night before the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral

The Telegraph reported that advisers and civil servants gathered after work for two separate events on the Friday night.

They were to mark the departure of James Slack, Mr Johnson’s former director of communications, and one of the Prime Minister’s personal photographers.

Mr Slack, who left his No 10 role to become deputy editor-in-chief of The Sun newspaper, said he was sorry for the ‘anger and hurt’ caused by his leaving do, while Downing Street apologised to The Queen.

The Telegraph quoted a No 10 spokesman as saying Mr Johnson was not in Downing Street that day and is said to have been at Chequers.

The newspaper reported accounts from witnesses who said alcohol was drunk and guests danced to music, adding that it had been told that around 30 people attended both events combined.
